Antique Scrimshaw Whaleship Puzzle Box

Rare 19th C. scrimshaw puzzle box carved of whale ivory, in form of a whale ship's hull. The stern is engraved with the initials J C T. There is nicely carved detail at the bowsprit. Excellent condition with much natural osteodentyne of the ivory. This little gem is a wonderful relic of the whaling days. Measures 4" long. Together with a later whalebone stand.

Instructions for opening the box: pivot open the top part of the deck cover left, then slide the second section towards the stern, allows opening the box to reveal the hollowed out hull.
