Maggie Meredith (1916-2012)

Maggie Meredith was born Helen Elizabeth Pousette-Dart in Valhalla, NY. She was an accomplished and highly collected Nantucket painter and poet. The sister of Richard Pousette-Dart (1916-1992), New York School abstract painter, she was the daughter of Nathaniel Pousette-Dart, (1886-1965) painter and printmaker.
After working in many fields, Maggie Meredith landed a job as a photo stylist in a commercial photographer’s studio in New York City. She met her husband, Stan Meredith, who had flown four-engine planes during the war. Having bought a plane of his own, they shortly moved to Nantucket. It was there that Maggie Meredith’s personal art became public. Maggie mounted her first show at the Nantucket Artists Association’s Little Gallery on the advice of the gallery director. She was later represented by George Vigouroux’s Lobster Pot Gallery, Reggie Levine’s Main Street Gallery, and Carolyn Walsh’s Sailor’s Valentine Gallery until finally, she decided to open a studio in her home. Maggie’s style evolved into primitive but precisely drafted contemporary imagery where assembled objects narrated the content.
