Vintage Nantucket Basket Purse by José Formoso Reyes (1902-1980) signed and dated 1960. Made on an 8" oval mold and measures 9-3/4" wide by 7-1/4" deep by 7-1/8" high overall. Features a classic Charlie Sayle carved Sperm whale ornament, knobs, and peg. Desirable dark patina. Excellent condition.

Provenance: Reyes made this purse as a personal gift to a member of the Ray family of Nantucket. "Mitchy" Ray taught Reyes how to make Nantucket baskets in 1948.
