Antique scrimshaw tooth "FANNY CAMPBELL"

Rare and choice antique American sperm whale's tooth engraved with the famous figure of Fanny Campbell, the fictional female pirate circa 1850.

This image was transferred from the widely known frontispiece of the book of the same name and published in 1845.

The Captain Fanny wears a man's costume with pistols at the waist and holds a skull and cross bones pirate flag.

Very good condition with a mellow patina. The reverse has a series of transfer dots of a large ship under sail but the work was not completed.
