A great antique folk art shellwork picture - The American Eagle with banner "Liberty & Union" set in an elaborate shell floral spandrel. This really is an extraordinary piece. Found in Massachusetts and dates circa 1870. Set within its original walnut frame with gilt liner are very intricate shell work florals with multi colored shells. The banner lettering is created with irredescent bugs and butterfly wings color the Eagle wings. Much use of sea themes - crabs, ferns, starfish, etc. The picture has been cleaned and restored.
